Alaska has two seasons

At the end of winter, in the in-between season we struggle against lingering somnolence. There is a certain frantic yet fatigued energy that overtakes everyone. The world is white and grey and dripping and running, rivulets and puddles. When the last crust of snow is breached, the moldering earth underneath is waterlogged to the point of appearing barren. Last years grass is half buried beneath muddy sludge and lays slack against the earth.
Yet everyone knows it is coming. Spring, spring! The Titmice and Chickadees mutter excitedly to each other and hop madly in the gathering light. Soon will be bumblebees and dragonflies. Soon will be green. Soon will be wild with joy wild with warm air and intoxicating skies.
